Adoption Steps

We have wonderful animals here eager to be your companion, best friend and confidante  Here’s how to go through our adoption process. Our adoptable pets are updated on our website daily.

How to Adopt: You must be at least 18 years of age with a valid I.D.

  • Submit an adoption application online. You may also fax the application to 410-833-9251. You will be notified by telephone once it is received.
  • General applications can be approved, and are good for 90 days until you decide which animal you would like to adopt.
  • If you are interested in adopting a specific animal, you MUST come in and meet it in person before you can select the animal for your application.
  • The application process may take between 24-48 hours to complete.
  • You are required to come in and meet with an adoption counselor who will be seated at the main desk of our Adoption Center. All members of the household are also required to come in and meet with the animal.
  • We require proof that dogs and cats in the home are up to date on a Rabies vaccine. To help expedite the process we encourage bringing in your pet’s vet records during your visit.

If approved:

  • Applicants that are approved for a specific pet must be in contact within 48 hours of the initial approval. After 48 hours of no contact the application will be cancelled.
  • Any current dogs in the home must come in for a scheduled dog introduction to ensure that the animals will get along.
  • A pick-up time is scheduled.

NOTE: Baltimore Humane Society reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone for any reason. The application process does consist of checking animal, child, murder and sex offense related charges on the MD Case Search. We take up to 3 applications per animal on a first-come, first-serve basis. We do not hold animals. Nor do we authorize adoptions to be “gifts.” The person who will be considered the owner of the pet must be present and go through the adoption process

The Adoption Center is open Tuesday-Sunday from 12:00pm-6:00pm. We are closed to the public on Mondays. Weekends are particularly busy so please be prepared. Please take your time in your selection. Baltimore Humane Society does not do same day adoptions. We do our best to be sure the animals are adopted into suitable forever homes. Each animal is an individual with different personalities and needs.

Rescue Groups

If you have a specific breed in mind that we do not have available for adoption try contacting a rescue group. Many of them can be found by doing an online search.

BHS relies on rescue partners to help with animals such as seniors, special needs, medical cases, behavioral cases, etc. Rescue organizations wishing to become a BHS Rescue Partner are asked to submit a Rescue Partnership Application. If your organization wishes to work with us (and we certainly hope that you do!), please complete the application and email, fax, or mail the application back to us.
