Adopting Our Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, & Other Small Animals Print E-mail

We have lots of wonderful animals here just bursting to give tons of love and affection.  If you’re ready to find your new forever best friend, here’s how to go through our adoption process.  Our adoptable pets are updated on our website daily.  So please check back frequently.

How to Adopt

  • You must be at least 18 years of age with a valid I.D.
  • Submit an adoption application online or in person.  You may also fax the application to 410-833-9251.  You will be notified by telephone once it is received.
  • General applications can be approved, and are good for 90 days until you decide which animal you would like to adopt.
  • If you are interested in adopting a specific animal, you MUST come in and meet it in person before you can select the animal for your application.
  • The application process takes between 24 and 48 hours.
  • You are required to come in and meet with an adoption counselor who will be seated at the main desk of our Adoption Center.  All members of the household are also required to come in and meet with the animal.
  • You must provide 2 references (not relatives) and veterinary contact information for any pets you have had within the past 5years.
  • If you lease or rent, you must provide your landlord’s contact information.
  • If approved –
    • Any current dogs in the home must come in for a scheduled dog introduction to ensure that the animals will get along.
    • A pick-up time is scheduled.
    • Rabbit adopters will require a home visit by the House Rabbit Society.

We reserve the right to request a home visit for any adoptable animals before final application approval.

NOTE:  Baltimore Humane Society reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone for any reason.  We take up to 3 applications per animal on a first-come, first-serve basis.  We do not hold animals.  Nor do we authorize adoptions to be “gifts.”  The person who will be considered the owner of the pet must be present and go through the adoption process.

The Adoption Center is open Tuesday-Sunday from 12:00pm-6:00pm.  We are closed to the public on Mondays.  Please be advised that animal visits out of their kennels and cages are until 5:30 p.m.  Weekends are particularly busy so please be prepared.  Please take your time in your selection.  Baltimore Humane Society does not do same day adoptions.  We do our best to be sure the animals are adopted into suitable forever homes.  Each animal is an individual with different personalities and needs.

Rescue Groups

BHS relies on rescue partners to help with animals such as seniors, special needs, medical cases, behavioral cases, etc.  Rescue organizations wishing to become a BHS Rescue Partner are asked to submit a Rescue Partnership Application. If your organization wishes to work with us (and we certainly hope that you do!), please complete the application and email, fax, or mail the application back to us.
