The employee must be able to perform the following tasks, among others.
The Veterinary Assistant is a member of the Baltimore Humane Society’s medical team, and reports to the Veterinary Medical Director. The Veterinary Assistant is part of a team that is responsible for the medical care of all shelter residents, the medical care of foster animals, and the preventive care of patients seen through the BHS Wellness
Center. The position involves preparation and administration of medications, implementation of medical treatments, feeding and care of sick animals, handling and restraint of dogs and cats for veterinary examinations, computer entry of all medical data, and education of the public on all aspects of preventive veterinary care including spay/neuter procedures. Additional responsibilities include keeping the medical center clean, organized, and stocked of all medical supplies.
Responsibilities
The candidate must have strong people skills, get along well with others, have a positive attitude, take initiative, possess the ability to multi-task and learn quickly. Knowledge of basic preventative veterinary care including vaccines, feline and canine diseases, and Spay/Neuter terminology is preferred but not required. Candidate should be proficient with Microsoft Software (Word) and possess basic computer skills. Familiarity with Avimark computer software is a plus but not required. Candidate must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours and lift/carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Shows initiative and is a conscientious worker. Ability to handle multiple tasks at once in a fast-paced environment. Detail-oriented and exercises good judgment when dealing with the public and animal-related concerns. Strong commitment to the mission of the Baltimore Humane Society and to the mission of the Spay/Neuter Center.
